Read the long explanation's username. Should tell you all you really needed to know (but the rest is a good laugh).

person posting's name was "facts-i-just-made-up." It's likely this is all bullshit, or if accurate very coincidentally so.

The scientist in me stopped at boiling the pool and pulled out the calculator.

And it's expensive as hell, so I advise all rich people to do it as a status symbol.

Fun fact, I’ve actually made vanta black in a lab. EE Senior design project was to make a device that could grow it for laser targets.

DiracsDelta . 2019-03-25 16:13:08
We shot the targets to make ball of super high temp plasmas and observe spectra. Made 26 times ionized nickel, for example.

Also: the guy who made Vantablack is a huge dick, buy Black 2.0 or the newer versions of it because it’s cheaper and made by a cool dude

Seriously is, although if your pool had vantablack tiles lining it, I'd be impressed if the sun could heat it to 120 degrees. 1/2

N... none of this is true... vantablack might absorb uv readily but it would not flash boil a pool of water... heat capacity of water cmon

HommeDeFeu . 2019-03-25 16:25:43
The energy has to transfer to the water, the water being cooler will continually cool the tiles. Also use bormine instead of chlorine.

1 gram = 1 calorie = +1 degree celcius. 2.5 mega liters in an olympic swimming pooln so from 20c to 100c is about 200 billion calories.

Someone should to try it, just to test the science.

Boiling a pool of smallish size and depth (11800gal) from an average uniform temp of 70F would require in excess of 14 Million BTU 1/3)

EggFooYung . 2019-03-25 16:45:12
A 12x24 foot pool converts to 26.75 m^2 (assuming a flat floor) and the earth surface receives average 164w/m^2 in a 24 hr period. (2/3)

imadethisaccounttotellyouthis . 2019-03-25 16:45:28
An olympic poolr is 25m by 50m. Light has about 1.94 calories per square cm per minute. So 12.5million cm2 x 1.94 is 24,250,000 calories/min

EggFooYung . 2019-03-25 16:46:11
Discarding reflection and refraction of water, the bottom surface of the pool would get, on average 14,959.67 BTU per day. No boiling. (3/3)

Means that in 137.45 hours of xonstant direct sunlight, with perfect absorption and not heat loss, a pool would boil.....

Seriously, it's not like it would happen so quickly and extremely. The tiles would heat up, but it would take a while for the water to do so

Also, even at 100 % efficiency, sun power is not that concentrated, and it would certainly be attenuated by the water
