For the curious - The snakes are ball pythons (Python regius) and the lizard is a Central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps).

Both are extremely common in the pet trade and easy to care for, though it is usually done incorrectly non the less.

Question, is the holes in the mouth specific to certain morphs or is it something any ball python can have?

valdemarjoergensen . 2019-04-15 09:58:16
Morphs generally do not affect anything except colour and pattern (there are exceptions like scaleless). Those holes are heat sensing pits.

As far as I know most snakes have the holes. They're heat sensors to help them catch prey. Could be wrong about the "most" bit.

They use them to "see" using heat vision. Makes it easy for them to see their warm blooded prey like small rodents in the dark.

Most snakes dont have them. Only pythons, a few boas, and vipers have heat pits

Not all boas. All pythons and vipers do

Are boas specifically the fuck off massive snakes or is there something else to differentiate them?

Yeah I know, I just I mean how pronounced it is(almost like holes in the mouth)Its something Ive only seen a few times with certain morphs.

Not all pythons either. The two Aspidites genus members doesn't.

valdemarjoergensen . 2019-04-15 11:37:52
Not all vipers have them, there's a reason why Crotalinae are know as the pitvipers, it's because the other vipers doesn't have them.

It does Aspidites - Woma and black headed python. Australian pythons that feed almost exclusively on other reptiles.

Their size has little to do with it. I own a boa that only grew to 40cm, it's about who they are related to.

Again morphs has nothing to do with it. And they aren't as much holes as dents, they don't go through to the mouth.

I grew up with an organ pianist, so I immediately thought about them having pipe organs...

watched a few vids on the spider morph over the weekend, made me quite sad

valdemarjoergensen . 2019-04-15 17:28:57
Yeah, in my opinion they should be illegal to sell, but there is actually many morphs with problems. Which is why I avoid them entirely.

The natural variations are usually they best looking anyways.
