For anybody wondering why schools skip E, it's because E is a fail the same as F is. Which makes it pointless to differentiate between them.

You tried your best, and you failed miserably. The lesson is: never try...

I legitimately did’t know the other countries’ grading scales were like that. Interesting.

I was this way all through high school, barely made it through. Graduated with a 2.4 GPA was ranked 63 out of 69 I'm my class. Long story 1/

Education here is a mess and grading is just the tip of the iceberg. The right has long worked to kneecap public education

Thay paint it as failing and replace it with charters that are exempt from teacher education requirements and pay them poverty wages

Short, I went to work construction, got laid off, went back to tech school, graduated with an associate's of applied science in 2/

Biomedical engineering technology and finished on the dean's list with average GPA of 3.5. My brain took longer to get smart.

At this rate, D's should be omitted too. I've never been treated any differently for getting a D instead of an F.

PoliteButStillTiredOfYourAttitude . 2019-03-20 19:58:35
They might treat you like you failed, but D is still legally a pass whether they like it or not.

Canadian here. Probably changed by now and I don’t know remember the exact numbers for grading but I DO remember a few things: (1)

The words are the best part. It's why he's labeled as a failure despite being witty, resourceful, and talented.

There was no ‘D’. It went A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, F. Also, 75% was a C+. I’m just as confused as y’all. (2)

My college physics teachers graded on a 15 point scale. That’s the closest I ever got to the European model.

Hot take, I guess: If a student understands less than half the subject, they don't understand the subject.

Education is hard in America. 100% of the kids have to get 60% credit overall or get labeled as failures and "not left behind".>

YouL0stTheGame . 2019-03-20 20:04:12
Probably because it’s relatable. You try so hard and fail no matter what, like what’s happening to Bart.

It’s the same in China. An F (不及格) is anything 59% or worse.

Does any other country use a 50+ pass rate? That's pretty normal to me.

I guess you could say that you tried so hard, and got so far that in the end it doesn't really matter

Also the school system on average is just worse, largely due to lack of resources and funding.

That UK scale is incorrect. The grade boundaries change each year depending on the difficulty of the exam.

Still had to retake the course whether it was considered a pass or not.

Actually that's not How it works in Britain. That's a general rule but we're moderated. IE, if it's a hard test the grade boundaries are 1/

Comparing grading scales like this assumes that the exams taken in different countries are of equivalent difficulty.

Here in Canada we dont use grading scales, we just get the percent.

Yeah well, but on the other hand, would you feel secure is your surgeon got 50% on his exams?

LatteGrande . 2019-03-20 20:27:44
True, but that would make sense in a world where the American school system was teaching subjects and not on how to pass exams.

"Our average is your A", "american grades are harder". Not necessarily. The tests aren't the same. 59% being an f isn't bad because it 1/

thepht1 . 2019-03-20 20:30:23
Means 59% of people fail it, it squashes the boundaries (eg as per the 10 qu test in the post) making the difference between success and 2/

Failure a knife edge. It also biases towards testing knowledge and preparation rather than potential, which is often not a good idea. 3/3

Must be different in your country. Here E is a fail, D is the lowest pass.

etameta . 2019-03-20 20:36:05
In Italy grades go from 1 (worst) to 10 (best). Lower than 6 means fail. But it's arbitrary -- in some schools you need 75% just to get 6.
