What type of heating device would be used for 1000ml flask? What are those tubes called? What are the clamps holding the bottle in place called? Is there a way to something else either thanĀ  tap water? Because it does waste a lot of water.

Doesn't reflux waste a lot of water if you let the perfectly clean water run down the sink like that?

Or you just put a round-bottom flask over your beaker and save a hundred bucks..

This setup is not set up completely correctly! Flask should be clamped at the neck for main support of the setup. Condenser clamped lightly for additional support. Heatingmantle must be placed on a lablift in such a way that in case of emergency the heatingsource can be removed immediately without having to losen clamps of the setup.

It's all just for purity. With the right amount of reflux and feed forward a person can get a very pure product!

Reflux helps maintain the desired profile in a column. It is possible to under reflux and over reflux a column. Reflux is often used to keep the separation point at a very precise place in the column whether that place be towards the top, bottom, or middle area of the column. With this guys set up he could probably reflux (almost) hard enough the keep the liquid from boiling

Hello, I don't understand what the point of refluxing is? Please can someone explain to me the purpose of refluxing in Chemistry?

Just In case anyone else is trying to find the "jubilee clamps" they are made buy Unex in Germany. These are simply tubing clips with a hexagonal head. As for the vid thank you for mentioning other condensers can be used. I've had bad luck with glass coiled condensers and I've found an Allihn condenser works well.

@dalsenov It's meant to warm or separate certain materials or solvents without losing any of the solvent or product.

Thank you very much for the video! It's very interesting! What I don't get is its purpose..Does the mixture do change it's chemical composition as an effect of the boiling? Is it a separation process or a chemical reaction (for instance some thermal cracking).

@Panzer0127 Bumping can also be problematic in that it could break the round-bottom flask.

Oh! I now know what reflux means... In my A-level organic chemistry studies, I have been told to use either the term "reflux" or "heat". But now I guess the "reflux" would be more accurate to describe such organic reactions.

The anti-bumping granules ensure that the solution boils in a controlled way. Without them, the solution is likely to 'bump' as it's heated, sending the solution up the condenser and perhaps out of the top. The cool water is to keep the condenser cool so it can continue to condense the solvent vapour. Without the cold water the condenser would warm up more and more, and the vapour would pass through without condensing. Hope that helps!
