Kind of surprised they didn't include that one scene of the doctor amputating an arm. Would have loved to hear the comparison between the literal hacksaw job then and modern surgery today.

About amputations: "In the late 1800s, there was no significant concept of this"
"You need to repair that leg. In the 1800s, there's nobody that's gonna repair it"
Aren't amputations the most common thing to see in that time?
All most every war veteran have one.
Just imagine a field hospital.

I’m sorry, he does not know his medical history at all. Medicine did in fact save lives in the 1800s.
Doctors in the 1800s absolutely knew about pain meds, blood loss, surgery, amputations, and more.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in 1899.
People have always loved drugs. Opium has been around forever, Laudanum was created in 1572. Cocaine was popularized in the mid-1850s but has been used by the indigenous people of South America for centuries. Heroin was invented in 1874. All of these would have been available at hospitals as pain medications. (Also freely available just anywhere really.)
Surgery has been perfected over the last couple hundred years, how do you think we got to where we are today? Dr. Benjamin Bell was a surgeon practicing in the late 1700s. He pioneered surgery throughout Europe and America by creating and popularizing surgical techniques that improved amputation survival rates and regularly used pain medications with his patients because he didn’t want his patients to suffer pain in treatment and recovery. He published his six volume work A System of Surgery from 1783-1788 (and you can view it for free! Online!) In it, among a billion other things, he talks about things like pain management and how to minimize blood loss by applying temporary tourniquets. He also talks about things like head trauma and brain injury and how to treat those.
In the mid-1800s Dr. Robert Liston was famous for amputating whole limbs in just 2.5 minutes. A few times he was a little too enthusiastic and cut off testicles and his assistant’s fingers along with the leg. The reason why he had to go so fast was because blood loss was an issue they were trying to avoid that, as well as make the pain as short as possible for the patient. He also advocated for cleanliness and sterility in his hospitals.
In 1867 Dr. Joseph Lister published his antiseptic technique in The Lancet. He advocated wearing gloves, hand washing between each patient, and sterile fields for medicine. It took a few decades but it caught on in the rest of medicine.
The American Civil War in the 1860s resulted in Clara Barton founding the American Red Cross and medicine to advance farther in America.
Medicine after about the 1600s is actually credible and did save lives. It’s a shame he doesn’t know about the rich history of medicine.

If you want to learn more there are museums and books. In England, the Hunterian Museum. In Scotland, the Surgeons Hall Museum. In America, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, National Museum of Health and Medicine, the Mütter Museum.
