About :

In Gangsters in Paradise - Deportees of Tonga, VICE embeds with four Tongan nationals who have been sent back to the tiny island nation where they were born after serving prison time in New Zealand and the United States. Former gang members, they often struggle to reconnect with the culture, the language, and the people.

They are haunted by the stigma of their criminal pasts, which casts a pall over their employment prospects and puts a barrier between them and their compatriots.

Government support for returnees is non-existent, wages are low, and with Tonga in the midst of a methamphetamine crisis, the temptations to revert to the lives of crime they hoped to leave behind when they left prison are high.

We are all human. We all make mistakes. We can't choose our parents. We can't choose our race. We can't choose the circumstances we will be born in. We are all human. We can at least have compassion for one another.

despite what the criminal convictions are, it saddens me that they get dumped like that in a '"foreign" country that they don't even know about although they are tongan by blood. Life is honestly all about a second chance. If the system gave them that, things would've been different, well from my opinion. It's really sad. I cry everytime i watch this. You can actually picture what they saying now, it could've been different. Now im sad again lol. But all i can say is, my god bless and be with them. In hopes they can change and get an opportunity later in life to go back and do things 10 times better than the last. My prayers they will all be included cause i strongly believe in second chances.

True what the commissioner was saying about regulations needing to be changed. These deportees just get dumped there and no one informs the authorities? The whole system is messed up. On a brighter note tho, noticed how a lot of them had their own land? That's what I love about Tonga.

Well done Vice, you always glorified gangsters, this is a good look. Problem in countries like Australia is Juvenile Justice, they let them loose until 18 and suddenly mischievous teenagers becomes criminal. Juvenile Justice makes them feel invincible until they becomes legal adult and everything changes. They have to change this otherwise young kids don't foresee what'scoming when they become a adults.

Great video. Vice is back at it again.

Well, i wish these guys would not have committed crimes and hurt people and themselves. But still, they seem to be very reasonable and got ahold of themselves. I wish them a happy and peaceful life in their islands.

Many of these deportees grow up in dysfunctional societies, around poverty, violence with little opportunity. Deporting them is criminal, basically moving the problem from a rich country with plenty of resources to a tiny struggling island. Terrible, dumb policy. USA, Australia and NZ should take responsibility for these people, they are products of those countries.

Why was the second guy not deported to Australia since that is where he was born? Bullshit deporting him to Tonga because Australia does not want to foot the bill for its own if they do not have white skin, oh lets fob him off on a much smaller and poorer country. He should be able to get into australia even if he cannot go back to New Zealand.

Hung around with a family of Tongan crips in highschool. They honestly were the coolest people with a love and passion for the earth and music, they could rap a gangster verse than belt out a Hawaiian love song back to back. Needless to say they were fucking terrifying in war times. When anyone got fucked with the whole family would get this look in their eyes like murder was the only option. Even when they fought simple fights they would put so much rage and force into every swing. R.I.P. to the homies lost. This video is facts

This was an incredible documentary. It moved me deeply and showed part of humanity and the planet that I knew nothing about. It gave me immense perspective for how fortunate I am and forced me to feel deep compassion for people I've never met. Yeah, I think Vice is starting to turn it around.

Sometimes ya just Gota take out the trash...every culture has its trash should just take everybody in prison that's been there 3 times and put a bullet in there heads and be done with it cause if they can't learn from a mistake the first time then they will stay on that path and continue to fuck it up...while they are at it kick everybody off the benifit that fails drug tests every week... Then they commit crimes and go prison 3 times and they get put down and sooner or later no more trash

Well something that should be clear (because that fat guy makes it sound like we're just dumping the worst people on these societies) is that they are YOUR people who ILLEGALLY were in the United States. Sure, the reintegration program should be better, but that's not the job of the US in any way, and it starts with changing your culture and getting educated. Learn how to implement free market capitalism. Learn how to raise children so they don't grow up violent. This will set them on a road to find meaning so they aren't using drugs and joining gangs. But don't make it sound like the problems in Tonga or Fiji or anywhere else that the US sends deportees has much at all to do with the US because it doesn't. No country DESERVES another country's aid money, or help in any way. Dumping aid money, missionaries, or aid workers on countries has a very shortterm effect because the ROOT of the problem isn't fixed...the culture. And the guns aren't because of America either. It's because of a vacuum in the market. I could keep going but I think I've made my point clear. Good documentary all around, but the lack of responsibility some of these people take is astonishing. But that's not specifically a Tonga problem. We have the same problem in America where some people just refuse to admit they're wrong, and now we have morons like AOC, Warren, Tlaib, and many others wrecking local economies, cultures, and the foundations that made America great in the first place. Don't make America Tonga.
