Does Stop Leak Work? - EricTheCarGuy

http://www.ericthecarguy.com/
As technicians we all have opinions based on our experiences and sometimes the experiences of others, stop leak seems to be one of those things. In my experience it really hasn't done much for me and I haven't seen it perform any miracles but that's not to say that it hasn't at one time or another. I welcome your responses on this topic and look forward to hearing your opinions just be nice.

i put blue devil for my oil leak... but it kinda worked.... but it gumup oil pump, so check oil light came on and engine sound rough at idling.... so it gumup some stuff inside... two oil changes later(7000miles), check oil light is finally off. I think my engine ran a little hot and oil starved for that five month... also, it felt like engine was running hotter.

I used the block tester and fluid turns very slightly greenish (still mostly blue) after a minute of pumping. I'm assuming this is indicating a possible small exhaust gas leak INTO my coolant. From what I'm reading, the head gasket sealant is more likely to work if coolant is leaking OUT through the head gasket vs gasses coming in, is that correct? It's an '08 Sienna with 224k miles that we paid $4k for a couple years ago. I'm not feeling the $2500 head gasket replacement. Still not sure either which product to try ... Barr's, K Seal, K&W, etc.

I wouldn't recommend stop leak put it it to stop a head gasket leak and now you need a radiator / thermostat / heater core & guess what a head gasket take my word for it even if you have to pay $1500 for someone to install it, it's still cheaper

yeah sounds like a mechanic that is losing money due to stop leak. i like in this video he shows you a thermostat with some stop leak on it and build up on a broken part that who knows where he got that part from or what the build up was from. ill tell you this a thermostat is under 10 bucks and very easy to replace the stop leak has a chance to keep mechanics like this guy from raping your wallet out of 1500 to 2000 bucks. yeah ill save my money and use blue devil or bars leak.

Let me save you some time and money. I used Bars leak head Gasket Failure, it made my problem worse, the car was leaking oil into water but added leaking coolant into cylinders. The only fix was to take off the cylinder and put in a new head gasket and have the head skimmed.

I had a coolant leak from the lower thermostat housing and intake manifold. I used a block seal, and the leak reduced 99% for a week, and then a little more coolant started leaking but still about 80% less than before. I'll try another application soon. But until then, i'm satisfied.

Mechanics tell me that block seal ruins heater core, but mine still gets hot.

Eric, you have problems, your weird. That cardboard window blind is weird. It sucks that I found you.

Without you though things would not so clear, I have a 5.7 hemi that took a big heavy shit in my breakfast after a year of running like a charm. The engine at least. The rest is the pickup is looking like a leaky classic. Your hilariously weird which I like and your not full of yourself or just filling gaps left and right for more video time and I do like that. Thank you dude, for real.

Old thread. Oh well, here's my take. Stop leak for a head gasket is a non-idea. Fix the head gasket. Stop leak for a freeze plug behind the transmission, not a bad idea. This has been working for me since 2010 and it is now 2019. There are good reasons for stop leak, but I would not use it to fix a head gasket.

To be fair that thing looked like it was beyond stop leak. Just looking at the sludge in the radiator(which was most likely before) is enough to do major replacements in the cooling system.

I'd say this is another case of someone who waited too long and tried to fix something that was dead already. I still want to see valid results lol

The question should be rephrased,
If your head gasket blew in the middle of a desert during a zombie apocalypse, do you think stop leak would get you out of the situation.

It worked for me...

What happened was the thermostat i put in it (that was only a few months old) FAILED, and it caused the damn thing to open up several leaks. The radiator had a huge crack in the top where it's plastic, and it opened up another leak around the block somewhere. Put this shit in, and boom, it sealed the leaks.

Not sure how long it will last. It's an old 99 civic EX with 200k miles on it, so I just want to keep it running a little while longer. Motor, and tranny seem fine, so maybe some honda enthusiast will buy it just for that.

I have a leak , I put a seal is not leaking any more. And I would spend 500 in changing a head gasket but mechanic charge more and I dont have that amount of money .. why should we pay 1500 for something that there is cheapest ways to fix it...and as I said if the mechanics reduce the price of labor we all will do it.. so that's way companies came with a cheaper product and they are getting money and because they are fixing expensive issues .

Nulon Stop leak works and works well. Ive had 4 turbo diesels in my time and they all needed coolant top ups. I just assumed thats how they are even though it doesnt really make sense. I had a coolant leak where I had to top up radiator every 12 km trip to and from work. It turns out that one of the metal coolant return lines from the turbo developed a hole from coolant system neglect by me. In desperation I tried $13 Nulon Stop Leak and initially thought it didnt work because after going around the block it was still leaking. But the next day after topping up coolant admittedly by very little it hasnt lost any coolant. So since 2004 since driving my Surfs for once no more coolant top ups AND its cooling better. The car has a centre console heaterand I can feel the coolant responding to power ie hot coolant but it cools quicker and subsequently the air from heater is warm to hot rather than hot to extremely hot. I put this down to the system pressurising up to pressure like it was designed to do. Previously topping up constantly meant coolant was going somewhere but never any evidence and cooling system was never reaching full pressure hence running hotter. Nulon Stop leak works!

If your car is a piece of crap, and your trying to get what u can out of it, it's perfect for you. As with any important decision make sure you look into your specific problem, on the internet, YouTube, auto parts store, and ask friends, always a good idea, asking a mechanic at a shop can be problematic since telling you you need work done on your car would be beneficial to them. Use your brain is my advice, which also means if you decide to use the product, make sure you do so properly, don't half ass it, for example if it's a coolant leak, it says it's a good idea to flush your system first for best results, well do it, and follow directions exactly as stated, go on YouTube and there should be an instructional video made by the product's company, not just regular people filming themselves doing it, although watching them as well can't hurt, just remember they're not mechanics, so their stating things as facts doesn't make them true, so watch them objectively, trust your good judgement, which means doing the homework like I said, once you do that, whatever you decide you should feel fairly confident making your decision, then again I would say the same logic applies to all decisions that are difficult to make. Not knowing Jack squat about something may be true, but if you you have common sense, do your homework on said problem, you don't need to be a Harvard grad to decide what's best for you when you do that, common sense is enough once you have enough information on the subject, but remember, someone may be 1000% confident telling you "all you have to do" is this or that, but people used to be 1000% confident the world was flat, more information was what they were missing, which could easily be the case with someone telling you they know what they're talking about......

I experienced the same, was loosing water and 4-5 days back before taking to garage i tried my last chance to see how it performs. Usually every 2-3 days i was adding 1l with current milage i do, and for 4-5 days i have no issue. I hope it worked well enough. ( they told me needs to be opened and gadget should be replaced ).
While adding stop leak i suggest you to dilute it with one lt of water and add it. It will dissolve more homogeneous.
Thanks.

Towards the end of this piece I forgot about what I was here for and instead (especially as you were discussing the 'EGG WHITE' home remedy) I felt like I was watching a remake of Apocalypse Now, and you were Marlon Brando: "Egg whites?
