Does Stop Leak Work? - EricTheCarGuy

As technicians we all have opinions based on our experiences and sometimes the experiences of others, stop leak seems to be one of those things. In my experience it really hasn't done much for me and I haven't seen it perform any miracles but that's not to say that it hasn't at one time or another. I welcome your responses on this topic and look forward to hearing your opinions just be nice.

Hey. I dont think that is stop leak. It seems like the head gasket was sprayed with the copper high temp spray before installation. I've seen it done before. Thanks Eric.

Great vid..I agree never use sealant on a headgasket problem..but leaking heater core on a FORD Freestar where the entire dash and steering column has to be removed to access the heater core for replacement..yes.. I used a product called Irontite...mixes with coolant..no need to flush and/or drain...follow instructions to the letter and run vehicle for an hour..no more core leaks...no plugged thermostat. This product is the consistency of milk with no pellets or chunks. I was very sceptical but for $20.00 it did the job. One year later still no leaks. Worth every penny. Best to you and yours.

Eric, we love you and thanks for all your help. In this case, I respectfully repeat what you said, you are still learning. Everyone knows the best solution is to replace the gasket. Just like that cardboard that is taped on the window of your door behind you in the video. The best solution is to replace the door or put up a blind, but the cheap easy solution was to tape up cardboard. You are not so different than us stop-leak users. It worked good enough but door window professionals will strongly suggest you hire them instead.
I would add that a mechanic is not the best source to judge stop-leak. If it works then the mechanic will never know about it. You only see the times it did not work. I just tried it and it seems to be working good enough. I know it is probably temporary. If/when it fails, I will visit my mechanic.

My opinion, use it if u found the problem very early, but if u left it for a while & the leak is bigger, fix it... & after u've fixed it, use 1 bottle & top it up with ur regular oil.

What about Bars Leak ? What about Blue Devil ? Do you have any opinions about those ? Because they seem like better products than Stop Leak.

Well like you said in a pinch then yes. And also cars dont over heat by themselves. That being said some people use block seal and dont change the thermostat(example) if that is what made your car heat up. Ive used it a few times. In a mirage it lasted 2 and a half years. In others ive used it until i save up for the repair. So depending on the situation yes it works.

I'm here because I'm curious, what about a crack through the block with a coolant passage leaking externally? No combustion leakage into the cooling system anybody wanna throw .02 at that?

Makes sense a mechanic would not endorse stop leak all they have to do is order the gaskets and replace if its on their dime. Dont charge mega dollars labor on their own vehicle.

Hello Eric, I'm having a strange problem in my car, every time I open my radiator cap in the morning there is a pressure coming out even if the engine is cold and not run for 24hrs. What are the posible causes of it? New aluminum radiator, new radiator cap all hoses are good no external coolant leak. My engine is 4d56 diesel mitsubishi

Would you recommend stop leak for a 1/4 inch hair crack in the plastic part of the radiator? It only leaks when I shut the engine off as its cooling down.

AT-205 Works. it stopped leaks in my 1988 Honda Accord. Transmission leaks, Power steering leaks, and oil seal leaks. the power steering was the worst i put the entire bottle into the reservoir, and the thing went crazy, foaming up, then the steering got hard, then the leak stopped. it was using up 1/3 to 1/2 the reservoir " per day" it is a bit expensive but unlike all the other products this one "WORKS".

in many cases a simple job remove the valve cover gasket and retorque the head bolts in a lot of the earlier aluminum block head applications they did just that on their recommended service intervals and if you did the recommended services you had no head gasket problems

The problem is that if you bring this to a mechanic he is going to tell you that you need this and that and that and that and that and that. And it took this amount of time at 75$ an hour. That is why people try to use a 10$ can of stuff. When the mechanic tells you the repair costs more than the car, then what do you have to lose by doing trying to do a cheap repair that will ruin the car? Either way, you still lose the same amount of money but this way you had a chance at being successful. And poor women and elderly people, they get hustled by mechanics so hard.

i put blue devil for my oil leak... but it kinda worked.... but it gumup oil pump, so check oil light came on and engine sound rough at idling.... so it gumup some stuff inside... two oil changes later(7000miles), check oil light is finally off. I think my engine ran a little hot and oil starved for that five month... also, it felt like engine was running hotter.

I used the block tester and fluid turns very slightly greenish (still mostly blue) after a minute of pumping. I'm assuming this is indicating a possible small exhaust gas leak INTO my coolant. From what I'm reading, the head gasket sealant is more likely to work if coolant is leaking OUT through the head gasket vs gasses coming in, is that correct? It's an '08 Sienna with 224k miles that we paid $4k for a couple years ago. I'm not feeling the $2500 head gasket replacement. Still not sure either which product to try ... Barr's, K Seal, K&W, etc.

I wouldn't recommend stop leak put it it to stop a head gasket leak and now you need a radiator / thermostat / heater core & guess what a head gasket take my word for it even if you have to pay $1500 for someone to install it, it's still cheaper

yeah sounds like a mechanic that is losing money due to stop leak. i like in this video he shows you a thermostat with some stop leak on it and build up on a broken part that who knows where he got that part from or what the build up was from. ill tell you this a thermostat is under 10 bucks and very easy to replace the stop leak has a chance to keep mechanics like this guy from raping your wallet out of 1500 to 2000 bucks. yeah ill save my money and use blue devil or bars leak.

Let me save you some time and money. I used Bars leak head Gasket Failure, it made my problem worse, the car was leaking oil into water but added leaking coolant into cylinders. The only fix was to take off the cylinder and put in a new head gasket and have the head skimmed.

I had a coolant leak from the lower thermostat housing and intake manifold. I used a block seal, and the leak reduced 99% for a week, and then a little more coolant started leaking but still about 80% less than before. I'll try another application soon. But until then, i'm satisfied.

Mechanics tell me that block seal ruins heater core, but mine still gets hot.

Eric, you have problems, your weird. That cardboard window blind is weird. It sucks that I found you.

Without you though things would not so clear, I have a 5.7 hemi that took a big heavy shit in my breakfast after a year of running like a charm. The engine at least. The rest is the pickup is looking like a leaky classic. Your hilariously weird which I like and your not full of yourself or just filling gaps left and right for more video time and I do like that. Thank you dude, for real.

Old thread. Oh well, here's my take. Stop leak for a head gasket is a non-idea. Fix the head gasket. Stop leak for a freeze plug behind the transmission, not a bad idea. This has been working for me since 2010 and it is now 2019. There are good reasons for stop leak, but I would not use it to fix a head gasket.

will stop leak cause the heater core to fail?

Adrian . 2018-12-28
To be fair that thing looked like it was beyond stop leak. Just looking at the sludge in the radiator(which was most likely before) is enough to do major replacements in the cooling system.

I'd say this is another case of someone who waited too long and tried to fix something that was dead already. I still want to see valid results lol

The question should be rephrased,
If your head gasket blew in the middle of a desert during a zombie apocalypse, do you think stop leak would get you out of the situation.

phorse . 2018-12-15
It worked for me...

What happened was the thermostat i put in it (that was only a few months old) FAILED, and it caused the damn thing to open up several leaks. The radiator had a huge crack in the top where it's plastic, and it opened up another leak around the block somewhere. Put this shit in, and boom, it sealed the leaks.

Not sure how long it will last. It's an old 99 civic EX with 200k miles on it, so I just want to keep it running a little while longer. Motor, and tranny seem fine, so maybe some honda enthusiast will buy it just for that.

I have a leak , I put a seal is not leaking any more. And I would spend 500 in changing a head gasket but mechanic charge more and I dont have that amount of money .. why should we pay 1500 for something that there is cheapest ways to fix it...and as I said if the mechanics reduce the price of labor we all will do it.. so that's way companies came with a cheaper product and they are getting money and because they are fixing expensive issues .
