They dont stay sharp for a long time as you say. All chisels have to be sharpened OFTEN. every day of use,...but its easy, once you know how.

I am looking at some White or blue edge chisels, but have been told Japanese chisels chip easily and do not perform well in hardwoods ?, examples of hardwood timbers I use in Australia have Jenka ratings from 3,900 to 5,060 lbf in comparison American timbers, Hard Maple 1,450 lbf , Hickory 1.850 lbf, Black Walnut 1,010lbf any suggestions ?

Do you find any limitations using these compared to traditional western style chisels ?

You only sharpen at one bevel angle too!

You do NOT need Japanese chisels. They are a modern fad except if you are Japanese .All the fantastic European cabinetry over th last 400 years was done WITHOUT Japanese chisels.

Completely agree with Darly never cut the end of the chisel. You hammer it. It is actually called killing the chisel. Shrinks the diameter enough to get the hoop on. than soaking it in water makes it expand. It wil fit like a glove. just soak about 3/4 of an in. Allthis should be done befor you use it for the first time.

dont trim down the end of the handles to fit he rings, bruise it down with a hammer to get it to fit, drive the ring to the required depth, then soak the end in warm to hot water for about 40 sec, then peen the wood to keep it in place. The makers call it killing the wood to fit the hoop.
