There's not more than .002 at most on machined surfaces he's using way to much for a water pump. This is deadly to radiators & heater cores...

You used gasket maker and not sealent. It states that on the tube.

Just commented about this on another channel, a tractor dealer sealed up a rear axle top plate on a tractor and there had to be at least a tube of rtv on the outside, wonder how much was on the inside lol.

Speaking of wasting it, aren't you wasting it by spreading it all the way round all the bolt holes??!??

Glad to see some common sense with RTV. Infinitely useful when used properly. I find the best thing is to just read the instructions. Stuff like the Permatex Ultra Black is apply and assemble, let sit for 24 hours. The Ultra Grey is finicky; apply and assemble finger tight till it squeezes a little, let sit for 1 hour, then 1/2 turn. I used it for a Hyundai Genesis oil pan; my first time using RTV for an oil pan (no gasket available, Hyundai uses RTV). Worked perfectly.

All RTV instructions are the same. Assemble loose but in contact until you get slight squeezed out. Allow cure one hour. This forms the gasket. Then final torque assembly. But... If you can afford "The Right Stuff" sealant you probably won't go back to RTV.

id rather have a bit extra than do it twice most of the time the rtv cures by the time i get to putting fluids in it so i dont think chunks of it would break off

I let it skin over for a few minutes. Especially diff covers and transmission pans. 5-10 minutes. I put a 1/8-3/16โ€ bead and let the mating part flatten it out. Near 100% success rate.schteve is a good mechanic, and if his method works, great. Just sayin mine works too.too much schmoo and it will cause problems. Keep up the great vids.

If you let the RTV setup correctly .... snug bolts lightly ... 45-60 minute cure time ... then tighten bolts down to torque specs ... this is also the manufacturers recommendations if you ever bother to read the directions ... lol :o)

I feel like Steve gives about 80% good advice and the rest he's just talking out his ass and is ill informed on things, like you need to let RTV set some before fully torquing.

Boy do I remember when Ford sealed there entire engines with sealant !!!! I always found a ton of sealant in the oil pan !!ย
When I do not have a gasket. I like using RIGHT STUFF. It is supposed to be a "Gasket Maker". So far I have had great success ย with it.

Schteevan.. good tip. RTV is a lifesaver when used properly, even if you have autism... or maybe OCD. Hey Mr. E. ... You put your engine on backwards, so it's making your fan spin the wrong way :).

The right stuff is truly the best for metal to metal sealing. Porsche specifies a special anaerobic sealant by permatex but it's very hard to get and is effectively TRS. Your right, the surfaces must be clean and dry for anything to work.

Once again from the Loctite guy.....make sure your RTV is oxime based. If it smells like vinegar it will not work with oil or gas. Grey is for coolant and Black is oil or it used to be. You have two options on the silicone. If you let the bead cure before you mate the surfaces then you have a cure in place gasket that can be reused. If you mate the surfaces while wet and torque down the fasteners you have a form in place gasket. Always uses some weak Loctite on your fasteners so the flange wonโ€™t come loose. Also RTVs cure by moisture. Most take days to reach full cure. The vinegar smelling products are corrosive on electronics and bad with oil. While they work well for windows, I would not recommend them for anything heavy duty. If itโ€™s a buck a tube, donโ€™t use it on major components.
