Regardless of what happened in subsequent Olympic Games, One day in 2004 he became an Olympic Champion. That has no expiration date.

I blame the coach and his team for not getting him healthy after 2004 Athens. It's so weird and such a big failure to simply couldn't finish the race. I bet Liu was under tremendous pressure to run every race between 2004-2008 in order to keep his publicity and endorsement values.

Why do we even let girls compete in serious sports? Everytime its just a way worse version of the guys playing the sport hahaha.

I remember being in China in the summer of 2012 and he was EVERYWHERE. I think because olympics were going on he was so hyped up. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure this man carried

Hurdles is hard, but its not "really really" hard. At least not compared to the other sports. I used to do athletics, hurdles and pole vault primarily, though I could do most events reasonably well (even high jump as a midget). Whilst its true the guys hurdles are significantly higher than the girls, I'd played about with hurdles at a higher height to simulate what it would be like for guys doing the high hurdles. Its tricky but its not obscene. I had a very unusual technique in that I would switch legs each hurdle, usually people will take 3 strides and jump (for the guys). Switching sides makes it significantly more difficult, but even with that it was still on par with other events like throwing or long jump rather than something "really really" hard like pole vault.

Clearing the hurdles is surprisingly easy, running is obviously easy, everything else is just something you learn through practice. Stride pattern and drawing yourself down so you clear the hurdle by the lowest possible margin being the two key areas. I tried a conventional stride pattern and even stretching as far as possible I couldn't make it, adding 2 steps in slowed me down a lot, which is why I took the choice to learn to switch legs (and haven't seen anyone else with a technique like it).

He said Hurdlers is the most technical discipline of them all.... have you ever tried hammer throw??Do you know how much technical it is?Have you made any reasearch? It takes YEARS to make it to an olympic podium in the hammer. Most of the hammer throwers dont reach the medal position before 30 years of age...which means 15-18 years of training.....

Xiang no longer has a world record. Two players ran faster. But none of them has ever matched his achievements. Merrit and Robels were Olympic champions, just like Liu. But the whole of your career is important. Apart from the Olympic gold, none of them achieved anything great. Xiang has 4 medals of the world championships. Merrit, only one. Robles, not one. XIANG, YOU ARE GREAT! Athletics fans will never forget you.

We may never know if it truly was an injury that prevented Liu from competing at the Beijing Olympics. But one thing's for sure, these athletes do feel like the weight of an entire country (if not world) is upon them, when expectations are very high and everyone is looking up to them. And few athletes could handle that sort of pressure! People need to understand this! Sometimes it's better to keep silent and just let the athlete go out to compete. And then, afterwards, you can make all your noises in celebration.

People tend to forget he was young, 21, when he won gold, but 4 years later your bodies will take a toll on you. Bodies aren't built the same 4 years after, especially you will pull a muscle when running super fast and jumping very high. Another reason Olympic althetes usually retired within the next two Olympics. He should be proud for what he did for his country and will forever be in the sport history books. Applause are needed. 👏👏👏

I am a Tibetan dude who aspired to be a hurdler because of Liu. I happen to see his picture in one of the sports magazine when I was a kid( he won gold at athens), read article on him even though I couldn't understand everything that was written but still he caught my attention and admiration. I took hurdle in my tracks but wasn't able to make it through because it is the most demanding track in track and field. Your legs get overstretched and your career is finished.
