About :

Presenting the instruments Eldrim use in our music.
"Gnaal" is a bowed lyre (taglharpe) made of spruce, flame ash and bog oak.
Strings are made of horse tail.
Not a reproduction. More a bastard with various historical instruments as it's "parents".
We felt the need for a deeper tone/drone and came up with this creation.
Tuning: D (same as the D on a normal bass guitar)- A - D (octave higher)
Made by Espen Winther (Eldrim)
Here you can see the whole process. From drawing to sound:

Good to see someone who loves Early Medieval music and appreciates the beauty of Germano-Christian culture rather than obstinately holding to a form of paganism that can and will never be restored, largely because they converted to Christianity. All of the positive elements of Germanic paganism, such as the reverence of nature, and not to mention this music, survived into Germano-Christianity and were perfected and refined by the Faith, and all of the negative elements, like human sacrifice, were left behind in light of a better way and a more hopeful cosmological worldview. Thank you for recognizing that.

They came from centauri and Capella circa - 40ad talent scouting for muzak savants nyckelharpas needed to. Keep the peace with those pesky aurigans and canopeans

i've always loved these types of instruments. i want to use music like this in dnd campaigns, but it's so hard finding pieces long enough to sustain a whole encounter or village visit. the best i can do is poorly loop them.

Search for recordings in libraries for 20+years=barely anything.
FFwd 20+years later...
Search for same on YouTube=ridiculous comments relating to "real metal," right-wing martial tropes of "battle music," and the usual suspects of video game/movie cliche background theatrics.
Fucking sad and hilarious at the same time.

I love it. This is how I discovered this amazing instrument, and bought it, so thank you so much!
I have a technical question, how many "horsehair" did you assemble on the lowest D string please ? I tried to assemble about 80 horsehair, but I think it's not enough.

This is probably the most beautiful tagelharpa I've ever seen. I'm looking to build my own and your video and pictures are a great help for someone with no carpentry experience. Of course I'll go for something simpler but I really like the use of different woods and the will to make the instrument beautiful and meaningful - I'd like to incorporate the Raido rune which has come to mean a lot to me, maybe in the shape of the sound hole. The D tuning is really great, too. Do you believe the instrument needed to be a bit bigger to accomodate that deeper sound?

Thanks a lot.

Cool instrument! The sound actually reminds me quite a bit of the Cello, or at least some of the sounds I used to coax from mine. Traditional classical music uses mostly the smooth voice of the cello but if you dig into the strings really hard and play chords you can get it to sound rough like this. I'd love to have one of these to play around with though.
